Brisbane, Saturday 29 June, 2024

Walk and talk for mental health this June, be part of Walking Off The War Within in Brisbane and help fight depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Together we can shake off the stigma associated with mental health.  Join Emergency Service Personnel, Defence Force Personnel and members of public to walk in memory of Nathan Shanahan, a returned solider and firefighter, and other fallen Service Men and Women who have taken their own lives after battling mental health issues. Nathan was an advocate for mental health and PTSD; sadly, Nathan lost his battle in December 2016. Walking Off The War Within is one way Nathan’s legacy continues.

The Challenge – complete the ultimate 20km with 20kg or… …walk any distance you can – with or without a pack.

Bring the whole family – The track is sealed and pram/scooter/bike friendly for the kids. The event can be a great conversation starter, sharing the day with your kids can help promote the understanding that physical activity keeps the body strong and healthy and can promote mental wellbeing. It’s good to know that the track is a short stroll from the Pelican Park play equipment, if all that walking gets too much!

The course – Starting at Pelican Park in Clontarf, the course will trace along the scenic Redcliffe foreshore to reach Scarborough and then make a return journey to Pelican Park. The course features designated 5km, 10km, and 20km turnaround points, along with support stations located along the way to assist participants. Walkers will have the chance to walk and talk as one and supporters can watch their loved ones achieve their goal.

Register for Free, $10, $25 or donation – This is an inclusive event that is available to everybody. Register for $0, $10, $25 or a donation of your choice. Money raised through ticket sales supports event costs with proceeds donated to local charities that work in the field of  mental heath and suicide prevention.
