On Saturday 22nd April 2017 over 1,800 people walked around Victoria Park in Ballarat to raise awareness of Depression and PTSD and what a huge success the Walk Off The War Within Challenge was!

Why was the event so successful you might ask? The answer is simple….YOU! You all played a very important part in raising awareness of mental illness and I believe we sent a strong message that our mental health is just as important as our physical health. The memoriam to FF Nathan Shanahan and our other fallen Service Personnel was truly inspiring. So to you the participants, the supporters, our fantastic event volunteers, sponsors, support services we say THANKYOU!

WALK OFF THE WAR WITHIN Challenge

On Saturday 24th March 2018 at 9am Emergency Service Personnel, Defence Force Personnel & Members of the Public walked around Victoria Park in Ballarat to raise awareness of Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

In December 2016 Firefighter Nathan Shanahan lost his battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Sadly many of our service men and women have succumb to Depression and PTSD and taken their own lives.

The walk / challenge replicated the walk Firefighter Nathan Shanahan completed in April 2015 from Mildura to Adelaide. Nathan walked over 400 kilometres with a 20 kilogram pack to raise awareness of PTSD and Depression.

On Saturday we walked in memory of Firefighter Nathan Shanahan and other Fallen Brother / Sister Service Men & Women and marched around Victoria Park in Ballarat for 20 kilometres with a 20 kilogram pack which was to symbolise the weight of depression and the equipment our service personnel often carry.

The Man in the Glass (Poem)

When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you king for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself
And see what that man has to say.

It isn’t your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass,
The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life
Is the one staring back from the glass.

Some people might think you’re a straight-shooting chum
And call you a wonderful guy,
But the man in the glass says you’re only a bum
If you can’t look him straight in the eye.

He’s the fellow to please, never mind all the rest,
For he’s with you clear to the end,
And you’ve passed your most dangerous test
If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartache and tears
If you’ve cheated the man in the glass.
